About Me

In my work, I explore aspects of social realities using discarded or damaged elements of nature – such as ‘broken’ trees, driftwood and the nests and skeletons of birds.

These natural elements represent human displacement and transformation for me and aludes to the ‘melancholic’ beauty found in discarded objects, that are not always valued in our world – such as the millions of ‘discarded’ people displaced by mostly manmade disasters.

Nests represent for me the home as mostly a comforting shelter, but which all too often becomes a source of severe personal upheaval and distress. Current social realities are a sad reflection of what the human race is capable of… we build with the one hand and destroy so easily with the other!

I obtained a BA (Fine Arts) degree from NWU and work mostly on paper (using pen and ink, pencil, charcoal and watercolours). I enjoy the technical challenges presented by the fine art printing process and use a variety of printing techniques (etching, drypoint, aquatint, lino-and monoprinting. These techniques allow me to not only achieve intense linework, but to also achieve a variety of interesting tones and textures.

I am a proud member of The Printing Girls (a printmaking collective of amazing female artists) and of the Urban Sketchers, Johannesburg (a Chapter of the global Urban Sketchers organization).
